Just because…

I am sometimes asked why I volunteer at the cancer center.  I don’t know that I have a short answer to that question.

My dad died 23 years ago at age 49 from brain cancer. My husbands each died at age 56 from pancreatic and lung cancers.  The latest death caused by cancer has changed my perspective on life, illness and death.  I feel compelled to reach out and help in any way I can.  I’m not a doctor or a nurse.  I’m just a person who wants to help patients and their families by being kind to them, sitting with them and listening to them talk, bringing them coffee or a blanket or just otherwise helping to make their days just a little brighter.  I am especially drawn to those patients who arrive alone for their treatments and exams.  These patients are widowed, divorced, or have few or no friends. They are alone by choice or by circumstance.  It is difficult to deal with the cancer in any case; it is easier when someone is there to help them.  I would do this type of work full-time if I had no need to earn income.

I’ve volunteered for other causes in the past but cancer and patient care has become very important to me.  Perhaps someday I’ll know the correct response to give when asked why I do what I do.

  3. smilingbug says:

Yesterday I heard someone say that if a person has come into your life it’s because you might be able to help them. With all of the possible interactions in this life, it’s possible that another person in your life is because you can do or say something to help them. Your thoughts about offering a blanket are so true. I really admire your attitude.

  4. Rashmi Ra R says:

Because of people like you, there is still some hope left in this world. Thanks for your services.
