Since I have only recently been purchasing cut flowers, I wasn’t aware that many of the flowers are not natural, but are brightly dyed.  The dye eventually runs out of the flower petals into the glass vase through the stems.  I noticed this morning that the dye in the  purple flowers had leached into the water and appeared opaque and thick.

…and dark red.

…like blood.

I am somewhat reminded of the color of the blood in the bags used to intravenously transfuse blood into the many cancer and hematology patients we see each day.

The sight of the dyed water was unsettling to me.  I think I’ll avoid buying dyed flowers in the future.
