Friendly monsters

I had a favorite stuffed bunny rabbit doll and the other usual toys growing up.  But I have a special fondness for my nauga monster.

Nauga monsters were promotional items offered by Uniroyal when the company marketed naugahyde furniture in the 1960s.  You can read more about Nauga monsters using the following link:

My parents brought the nauga monsters home for me and my brother when they bought us child-sized naugahyde rocking chairs.  My brother had a blue chair and a blue nauga monster.  I had a red chair and a brown nauga monster.  We loved our chairs and our nauga dolls.

When I watch the Rankin/Bass cartoon Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, I am reminded of the nauga monster when I see the character known as the Abominable Snow Monster, aka The Bumble.  In my mind, the toothy monsters resemble each other.

Nauga monsters were very durable and that is probably why there are so many of them available for resale on eBay and similar sites.  I mentioned the nauga monster to my brother when we were reminiscing about our childhood and was happy to know that he remembered them too.  My brother and I have no mementoes of our youth other than photographs.  I’d like to buy one of the original 1960s monsters but they are usually bid up to very high prices on auction sites.
